Old City Etude is a psychogeographical sound composition that attempts to excavate the forgotten history of medieval Berlin. While Berlin's 20th-century past consistently comes to the fore, especially in its perplexing and patchwork architectural landscape, the city's medieval past, in turn, seems intangible and ignored.
Using manipulated field recordings taken from a sound walk tracing the path of the former medieval city wall, Old City Etude bridges a disconnect between medieval and contemporary Berlin. The piece recreates the city wall through physical movement in urban space and uses sound as a conceptual archaeological tool to dig up the contemporary remains of the old city.
