the decimal system is anthropomorphic, or: a number system always at hand
2021, ongoing
Performance drawings
Ink on paper, each 15 x 15 cm
How does our body create (mathematical) knowledge? In an ongoing series of performance drawings, I investigate the origins of the seemingly abstract and invisible force of math. I propose that math is rooted in the corporeal; in the case of the decimal system, I examine how such knowledge began in our hands and ten fingers.
During the performances, I play with two central gestures of scientific and mathematical practices: pointing and mark-making. What remains after each performance are the traces of a system of knowledge in process.
